The event was organised by the Tamil Nadu Council of Special Schools (TCSS). Justice B Pugalenthi, judge of the Madras high court, who was the chief guest, praised the efforts of the special educators and encouraged them.

The TCSS is hoping for the Tamil Nadu government to support special educators better. “The consolidated pay given to special educators was increased from 14,000 to 18,000 but still it is being paid to only two special educators and one physiotherapist in a special school no matter the strength of students. Despite doing the same work, other special educators are paid only lesser salaries by the management.

Nearly 400 special schools across the state are run only by NGOs. With better support from the government, we could do more to help children with special needs realise their potential,” said R Ravikumar, chairman, TCSS. Meanwhile, Teacher’s Day was celebrated with enthusiasm at various schools and colleges across Madurai.
