Madurai: A complex with two anganwadis in Kumaran street, Sellur, has been severely affected by water stagnation for the last four years. Pregnant women who come to get benefits under nutrition mission are the most affected and many have met with
accidents commuting on the road in the last few weeks, say residents
A day of rainfall leaves the anganwadi entrance submerged by water and parents have to help children cross over, say anganwadi workers.
“In the last few years, corporation workers desilt the rainwater channel only when accidents happen and a complaint elevates to higher officials”, said R Indra, an anganwadi worker. Parents of children complain about us when the kids get hurt falling in the stagnant water. We are extra-vigilant on the safety of children, she added.
Many pregnant women risk slipping due to the slushy mud accumulated at the entrance, said M Meenakshi, a resident of Kumaran street. A corporation engineer said that the drainage channel will be elevated so that silt doesn’t enter it. They are also planning to change the gradient of the road as a new one is already sanctioned for Kumaran street.
