Sellur anganwadis bear the brunt

Madurai: A complex with two anganwadis in Kumaran street, Sellur, has been severely affected by water stagnation for the last four years. Pregnant women who come to get benefits under nutrition mission are the most affected and many have met with accidents commuting on the road in the last few weeks, say residents A day of rainfall leaves the anganwadi entrance submerged by water and parents have to help children cross over, say anganwadi workers. “In the last few years, corporation workers desilt the rainwater channel only when accidents happen and a complaint elevates to higher officials”, said R Indra, an anganwadi worker. Parents of children complain about us when the kids get hurt falling in the stagnant water. We are extra-vigilant on the safety of children, she added. Many pregnant women risk slipping due to the slushy mud accumulated at the entrance, said M Meenakshi, a resident of Kumaran street. A corporation engineer said that the drainage channel will be elevated so that silt doesn’t enter it. They are also planning to change the gradient of the road as a new one is already sanctioned for Kumaran street.

Anganwadi workers stir for service benefits

Anganwadi workers in Bhubaneswar are demanding government recognition and a pay hike. They argue that despite increasing workloads, their salaries have not increased enough to support their families. They are calling for a monthly salary of Rs 18,000 and Rs 9,000 for anganwadi helpers. Meanwhile, in Chhattisgarh, the retirement age of anganwadi workers has been increased to 65, and in Ahmedabad, a public library is being converted into an anganwadi due to harassment. In Dakshina Kannada, the procurement of eggs for anganwadis has been affected by a cash crunch.

Anganwadi workers protest in Dehradun

Anganwadi workers in Dehradun held a protest rally to demand better salaries and other benefits. However, they were met with resistance from the police. A representative from the Chief Minister's office assured the workers of government support, but the workers said they will continue their movement until they have a meeting with the CM. Anganwadi workers in other cities, such as Vijayawada and Bhubaneswar, have also been protesting for better pay and recognition. In Ahmedabad, a public library will be converted into an anganwadi due to harassment faced by the librarian.

Police arrest anganwadi workers, foil rally in Vij

Tension arose in Vijayawada as anganwadi workers were arrested for organizing a protest demanding increased pay. Despite the denial of permission, hundreds of workers attempted to rally towards Dharna Chowk but were arrested by the police. Trade unions CITU and AITUC also staged protests in support of the workers.
