MADURAI: A 30-year-old autorickshaw driver was stabbed to death on Saturday by a bike rider after an altercation over a minor road accident, police sources said. The incident took place on late Saturday night near Villapuram in Madurai city police limits. The deceased was identified as R Panneerselvam, 30, from Villapuram.
Police said the driver was returning home after the day's work when the accident happened. "While crossing the South Gate on the Airport Road, the auto accidentally hit
Gnanavel Pandian
, 35, son of Ulaganathan from TNHB near Villapuram, who was on a two-wheeler. It was a minor accident and no one was injured. However, the duo picked up a quarrel over the incident. The wordy quarrel took an ugly turn when they entered into a fist fight. Passersby brokered peace and made them leave the place," a police officer said.
"However, Gnanavel Pandian was not in a mood to forgive. He followed the auto driver to his house and picked up a quarrel again. The accused took out a hidden weapon and stabbed the driver multiple times. He then escaped from the spot. After Kaleeswari, the victim's wife, raised an alarm, local residents rushed to her help and shifted the victim to the Government Rajaji Hospital in an ambulance. But Panneerselvam succumbed on the way. Doctors at the hospital later verified that he was brought dead," the officer added.
Based on a complaint from Kaleeswari, Avaniyapuram police have registered a case and are investigating the incident. Police said they are searching for the accused, who has gone into hiding. They are also conducting a background check to find whether Gnanavel Pandian was involved in criminal cases before.
