‘Neuro-endoscopy offers more benefits than traditional surgery’
Madurai: Neuro-endoscopy is ideal for congenital diseases, infections, tumours and degenerative diseases of the brain and spine in both adults and children, doctors have said.
Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday to brief about Neuro Endoscopy Society’s annual conference ‘Neuro Endocon 2019’ to be held from March 29 to 31, they said that neuro-endoscopy is a minimally-invasive surgical procedure for diseases of the central nervous system and could be performed on people of all age groups.
They also spoke extensively on neuro-endoscopy and how it was better than other available treatment procedures in several cases.
Neurosurgery consultant and organising secretary of Neuro Endocon 2019 Dr K Bagath Singh said, “It’s currently used for brain, ventricular, skull base and spine diseases. The field (of neuro-endoscopy) is progressing very rapidly with various technological advances.”
Though India is slowly catching up on in this field, it still has a long way to go, doctors said.
Head, department of neurosurgery at Meenakshi Mission Hospital & Research Centre (MMHRC) and organising president of Neuro Endocon 2019 Dr K Selvamuthukumaran said, “It is minimally invasive with excellent outcome. Patients require shorter hospital stays and follow-up. It is less expensive.”
More than 150 neurosurgeons from India and abroad specialising in neuro-endoscopy are expected to attend conference. During the event, neurosurgeons of MMHRC would live-stream actual neuro-endoscopic surgery on a patient in real time.
