Murmu to visit Kanyakumari today
Madurai: President Droupadi Murmu will be visiting Kanyakumari on Saturday after her two-day trip to Kerala. Security measures have been tightened and officials have conducted a helicopter landing trial at the circuit house. Murmu is expected to land around 12.30 p.m. She is scheduled to take a ride to Vivekananda rock, visit the Ramayana art exhibition and Bharat Mata temple. She is also expected to visit the Bhagavati amman temple later. Heavy police picketing has been deployed at the circuit house, helipad, Vivekananda memorial hall and the routes. Collector Sridhar, SP incharge Saravanan and senior officials inspected the arrangements. Advocate held for sexually assaulting girl, 3: A 55-year-old advocate in Karur was arrested on Saturday for sexually assaulting a three-year-old girl in Karur. All woman police station (AWPS), Kulithalai arrested Pazhaniappan of Inungur village who practises in Trichy and Kulithalai courts. Police said he sexually assaulted the girl when she visited his house on Friday. The girl informed her mother who lodged a police complaint. He has been booked him under Pocso Act and arrested.Madurai mayor opens anganwadi centre: Mayor Indrani Ponvasanth inaugurated a new anganwadi centre in Alwarpuram at a cost of 20 lakh under MLALAD fund of Madurai south MLA M Boominathan on Friday. The centre built by PWD in ward 29 can accommodate 30 children. According to officials, a new borewell has been dug up to provide water and all amenities for children have been provided. Corporation commissioner Simranjeet Singh Kahlon, deputy mayor T Nagarajan, Madurai south zonal chairperson Mugesh Sharma were present. Later in the evening, Nagarajan submitted a petition to Kahlon requesting to add his name in the inscription at the centre. Nagarajan said the corporation has been boycotting him systematically and his name has to be mentioned according to protocol.‘TN best suited for millet production’: Millets are a safe and healthy food compared to other staple food in the country and Tamil Nadu has better potential for millet production, said M Elangovan, principal scientist from Indian Institute of Millet Research (IIMR). He was speaking at the two-day national level seminar on millets in India on Friday. He said that millets are drought resistant crops and are better suited for dryland agriculture. Vinoth Rajendran, project lead of startup TN, Madurai said that farmers must make use of the subsidies given by the government to boost millet production. P Gopimanivannan, head of the department of food and dairy technology, said that millet was earlier considered as a poor man's food, but now after knowing the benefits of millets, the demand for millet in the market has increased.
