Mortal remains of Tirunelveli man shot in Jamaica brought home after 2 months
Madurai: The mortal remains of N Vignesh, a 31-year-old man from Tirunelveli who was shot dead in Jamaica last year, were brought home on Tuesday. His final rites were performed at Sindhupoothurai electric crematorium, with Tirunelveli MP Robert Bruce, Palayamkottai MLA Abdul Wahab, Mayor G Ramakrishnan, and others paying tribute.
Vignesh, a resident of Meenakshipuram, worked at a supermarket in the Turks and Caicos Islands, Jamaica. On Dec 18, a gang of armed robbers stormed the store, opened fire at the staff, and looted the shop. Vignesh suffered fatal injuries in the attack.
His family had appealed for the repatriation of his body, prompting diplomatic efforts by the ministry of external affairs. However, procedural delays held up the process for over two months. Chief minister M K Stalin intervened in Feb, expediting the coordination with Jamaican authorities.
Following sustained efforts, Vignesh's body was flown to Miami, then repatriated via New York, reaching Thiruvananthapuram Airport on Tuesday morning. A relative received the body, which was transported to Tirunelveli in a Tamil Nadu government hearse.
The cremation was carried out after family members and political leaders paid their last respects.
