MADURAI: Commercial Taxes and Registration Department Minister P Moorthy, who inspected the waterlogged extension areas of Madurai city on Saturday, ordered the officials to carry out temporary repair work on damaged roads. Permanent solution will be arrived at once the monsoon ends, he said.
Madurai district has been receiving consistent rainfall ever since the north east monsoon set in.
The extension areas are among the worst-hit and waterlogging has been reported in several places.
Moorthy inspected Anaiyur Ward 3, Officers Town and THHB Colony along with collector Aneesh Sekhar, mayor V Indirani Ponvasanth and corporation commissioner Simranjeet Singh Kahlon.
Talking to reporters later, Moorthy said, “A 265km underground sewer has been completed in these areas and preparatory works are under way to lay another 100km pipeline. Residents association and students have urged the authorities to repair the damaged roads and ensure that underground sewers work properly. Temporary repair works will be undertaken on a war footing. Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered to organise health camps to prevent diseases during the monsoon, which will be held across the district.”
The minister and officials later inspected Sathaiyaru dam which has filled up to the brim.
Moorthy visited T Mettupatti and consoled the family of Kayambu, 47, who died in flash floods after a stream breached. He also handed over a compensation of 4 lakh in cheque to the family.
