Man from Madurai arrested by Bengaluru police team in historysheeter attack case

Madurai: A special team from Bengaluru city police arrested a man from Madurai in connection with the recent attack on V K Gurusamy, a historysheeter and a close aide of former Union minister M K Alagiri.The accused has been identified as S Praveen, 27, of Madurai. Gurusamy, 55, of Kamarajapuram in Madurai, was at a hotel in Kammanahalli under the Banaswadi police station limits on the evening of September 4. A five-member gang, which had followed him in a Tamil Nadu-registered car, attacked him with weapons and escaped. Gurusamy suffered injuries on various parts of his body while three of his fingers were also chopped. He was subsequently admitted to a private hospital and is currently in a stable condition and recovering.Two police special teams were formed by the Bengaluru city police to probe the case. One of the teams was sent to Madurai to carry out an investigation since it was suspected that Gurusamy’s rival Rajapandi’s gang may be behind the attack. Sources said that the accused Praveen and four others were part of a gang reportedly formed by another suspect to murder Gurusamy. The gang is suspected to have acted on the orders of Vellai Kali Thevar, a member of Rajapandi’s gang, who is currently lodged in prison in a murder case. Police said that Naveen, one of the five accused, meanwhile had a non-bailable warrant against him in an NDPS Act case and surrendered in Madurai. The Bengaluru city police may take his custody.Gurusamy, who was a former DMK zonal president of Madurai corporation, had previous enmity with AIADMK’s Rajapandi from the same locality for nearly two decades. Due to political and personal rivalry between Gurusamy and Rajapandi, there were frequent clashes between their groups. There were more than 10 murders reported on both sides over the years since then. Gurusamy and Rajapandi both have several criminal cases pending against them.
