MADURAI: Prem Anand Sinha, the new police commissioner of

city assured on Sunday that no violent action will be initiated against innocent people.

He said that action will be taken against violators only according to the rule book.

The 2001 batch IPS officer replaced

S Davidson Devasirvatham

, who has been transferred and posted as additional director general of police (technical services). Prior to this, Prem Anand Sinha served as the additional commissioner of police, Chennai city.

The newly-appointed official said that the behaviour of police personnel and officers should be good while dealing with the public. “A programme will be conducted over this for the officials. Standard operating procedures in dealing with accused while conducting inquiry will be followed. However, anti-social elements will be dealt in a strict manner,” he added.

The commissioner also assured that more importance will be given to crime prevention and detection apart from effective redressal of grievances from the public. “Complaints regarding property loss will be registered as a case immediately. More vehicle check-ups and police patrolling will be held to prevent crime.”

He urged residents to install CCTV cameras at their homes and commercial buildings to ensure safety and help police in cracking criminal cases.

Prem Anand Sinha also promised to improve police-public relations. “Technology will be used effectively to manage grievances of the public. Police personnel's welfare will also be taken care of. Police officials will play an effective role in preventing the spread of Covid-19,” he said.

The best practices brought in by earlier officials in Madurai will be retained, he added.

Prem Anand Sinha started his career as assistant superintendent of police at Devakottai in Sivaganga district. He served as the superintendent of police in

Perambalur

and

Kancheepuram

districts. Later, he was appointed as the deputy commissioner of police, Anna Nagar, Chennai and director of the Narcotics Control Bureau for four years.
