Mental health key for preventing, managing diabetes, say Madurai doctors

Madurai: Ahead of World Diabetes Day on Nov 14(Thursday), doctors in Madurai said apart from diet and exercise, prioritising mental well-being is key in the prevention and management of diabetes. Exposure to chronic stress leads to the early onset of diabetes, and depression can lead to neglecting diet and medications, they said.Doctors at Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital said the incidence of diabetes has been on the rise in those in their 20s and 30s mainly due to stress-filled and sedentary lifestyles with poor diet choices. "Diabetic patients often experience anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, social isolation, low self-esteem, and fear of complications. Practising self-care, adhering to medications, and taking special care of their feet are essential," said Dr C R Mahesh Babu, the head of the department of diabetology.Dr P Krishnamoorthy, head of the department of general medicine, said that living with diabetes requires a proactive approach to maintain both physical and mental health. "Regular physical activity helps maintain energy and reduces stress. Getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night is crucial as it supports both metabolism and mood stability. It's also important to connect with family, friends, and support groups."On Tuesday, AIIMS Madurai, along with Govt Medical College, Ramanathapuram, conducted an international diabetes symposium. Speakers from various countries shared their knowledge and experiences along with Dr Sabu Augustine and Dr M Deepa, who talked about ‘Technology in Diabetes'. AIIMS Madurai executive director Dr M Hanumantha Rao was present.
