MADURAI: Madurai district police have arrested eleven robbers who stole 166 sovereigns of gold jewellery from employees of a gold finance company as they were transporting it. The entire gold has also been recovered, according to district superintendent of police V Baskaran.
The incident happened on the Trichy-Madurai highway near Kottampatti on December 8 when an armed gang intercepted two employees of the company who were transporting the jewellery from Villupuram to Madurai.
The gang threatened the employees and made off with the car and gold jewellery.
After Kottampatti police registered a case based on a complaint from the employees, three special teams were formed to nab the robbers. The SP said the police closely tracked the vehicle used by the robbers. "Since the employees were travelling from Villupuram, we tracked all toll gates with a few clues we had of the vehicle's description. Through CCTV footage we were able to get the vehicle number, but the number was found to be false," he added.
Finally, based on a tip, they were able to pick up one of the accused who revealed that the robbery was carried out by a gang. "We set up surveillance to arrest the members of the gang but they were slipping away. We had to chase them across Kumbakonam, Chennai, Vellore, Salem, Erode, Tiruppur, Ramanathapuram, Tuticorin, Sivaganga and Madurai. One by one we were able to arrest the robbers in different districts," said Baskaran.
The eleven arrested, Senthil Kumar, Arul Vincent, Rajkumar, Narayanan, Anand, Sathish Kumar, Muthu Pandi, Raj Kumar, Manikandan, Krishnaveni and Sevagan have been arrested and remanded in judicial custody. Two more suspects, including a robber and driver are absconding and efforts are on to arrest them as well.
