Madurai airport to launch 24/7 operations this winter

Madurai: Madurai Airport is set to operate 24/7 starting from the upcoming winter schedule, marking a major operational upgrade. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has invited airlines to submit their flight schedules, encouraging the use of nighttime slots for improved efficiency.Currently, the airport operates from 6:55 am to 9:25 pm IST. The shift to round-the-clock service will provide greater flexibility in flight scheduling and better use of the airport's infrastructure. The AAI's notification highlighted the advantages of nighttime operations, urging airlines to optimise their schedules to utilise the facilities fully. "This extension presents a significant opportunity for airlines to make more effective use of our existing infrastructure and resources," the notification stated.Madurai airport director P Muthukumar confirmed that preparations are underway for the transition. With existing infrastructure able to accommodate night parking for up to 12 aircraft, the airport is ready for this expansion. The director also noted that a Rs 5.92 crore investment will enhance passenger services with additional check-in counters, immigration desks, X-ray machines, conveyor belts, and departure gates.The decision to shift to 24/7 operations was delayed by administrative issues, despite being announced over a year ago. However, local trade and industry leaders have welcomed the move. Uthaman Mahendran, senior mentor of the Madurai Infrastructure Development Association, urged AAI to make 24/7 operations permanent. He also stressed the need to boost cargo operations, including cold storage for exports of perishable goods, which would benefit local traders such as jasmine flower exporters who currently rely on other airports like Trichy.S Rethinavelu, president of the Agro Food Chamber, expressed optimism that the new schedule could attract more international flights. He suggested that Air India Express may soon introduce a direct midnight flight to Kuala Lumpur, opening up new travel and trade opportunities. Additionally, he encouraged IndiGo to establish Madurai as a hub for domestic and international routes and urged Akasa Air to expand its domestic offerings from the airport.Tourism expert and former president of the Travellers Club, M Mustafa, said that round-the-clock operations could significantly boost tourism in Madurai. "Currently, most international tourists visiting the Meenakshi Amman Temple land at Trichy Airport. I hope more airlines take advantage of Madurai's potential, which will greatly benefit the local economy, including hotels and restaurants," he said.Madurai MP Su Venkatesan shared the news on social media, stating that official confirmation from the Civil Aviation Ministry is expected soon. He expressed confidence that the move would elevate Madurai's status as a key airport in South India, boosting both passenger traffic and cargo movement, and contributing to the region's economic growth.
