Leaky UGD network rankles Madurai east folk
Madurai: Residents of Madurai east zone have expressed anguish at the civic body for not bringing about a solution to the damaged underground drainage pipelines and sewage filled streets, that have been plaguing their area for weeks. Residents of Bibikulam, Mullai Nagar, Krishnapuram colony and Gomathipuram in Madurai east zone are most affected. In few areas, pipelines have been damaged mistakenly by the contractors while laying new UGD and drinking water pipelines and in some places the leakage is due to improper silting. Residents are fretted with the temporary desilting done by corporation workers as the UGD pipelines repaired by the workers starts leaking in a few days. V Sekhar, secretary of Bibikulam Mullai Nagar residents’ association said that three streets in the area - Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru street, Rajiv Gandhi street and Ranuva Kudiyirupu street are filled with sewage water leaking from UGD pipelines and adjacent manholes. “We are forced to walk on the sewage filled streets for the last one week,” said M Sethu Lakshmi, a resident of Mullai Nagar. She had also submitted a petition to mayor Indrani Ponvasanth, two days ago. D Raghavan, president of Gomathipuram residents’ association said that many streets in the area are flooded with sewage leaking from broken pipelines. He also said that the corporation should evolve a plan and make the contractors responsible for the repair as the person who breaks the pipeline will know the point of leak better. A senior corporation official said that in Bibikulam and Mullai Nagar the issue is persisting due to blocks in various pipelines. The whole network will be desilted in a few days to solve the issue permanently. Regarding the pipelines broken by contractors, the civic body has instructed the former to inform it as soon as a pipeline is broken.
