Glass bridge in Kanyakumari to open in Dec

Kanyakumari: State public works and minor ports minister E V Velu, who inspected the glass bridge work between Vivekananda Rock and Thiruvalluvar statue in Kanyakumari, said that the bowstring arch bridge will be ready by Dec. Velu inspected the construction work on Thursday along with department officials and was briefed about the progress. Addressing reporters after the inspection, the minister said that the bridge is constructed using the latest technology to withstand corrosion and strong sea winds. Tourists currently have to spend more time to see both these monuments using the ferry. Once the bridge is ready, they need not travel twice but can walk on this glass bridge to enjoy the sea view and visit the monuments, he said.The state govt is planning to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Thiruvalluvar statue on New Year's eve, and the bridge will be ready by Dec, said the minister. Tourists visiting the Vivekananda Rock and Thiruvalluvar statue currently have to take ferry services twice to see these places. To connect both the monuments on the sea, the state govt proposed a glass bridge at a cost of 37 crore. The 77m-long and 10m-wide bridge is under construction. The public accounts committee which inspected the bridge earlier this week expressed its satisfaction with the construction.
