Insurance firm asked to pay Rs 12.71L to injured victim

Madurai: Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal, Madurai has directed an insurance firm to give Rs 12.7 lakh compensation to a man, who suffered grievous injuries in an accident involving a private school bus five years ago.

The petitioner, M Vinoth Raj, who was working as a supervisor at a private firm was riding his motorcycle to work, when his bike got knocked down by a private school bus on June 18, 2013.

Vinoth Raj suffered injuries on his head, and grievous injuries all over his body and was hospitalised for two months. A medical officer ascertained his disability to be at 30 %. The petitioner subsequently moved the tribunal seeking compensation. The opposing counsel argued that the accident happened due to negligent driving on part of the two wheeler rider. The special sub-judge, P Thangavel said that there is no document to prove that the accident happened due to the negligence of the two-wheeler rider. Considering the age of the victim- he was 30 years at the time of his accident, the tribunal directed the insurance firm to pay a sum of Rs 12.71 lakh to the victim as compensation. tnn
