Madurai: Much to the surprise of residents, heavy rains were witnessed across Madurai on Tuesday evening for close to around two hours which left many areas of the city waterlogged.
The
rain, which began at around 4 pm on Tuesday evening, came down heavily both in the heart of the city such as streets around Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple in South Madurai to outer areas such as Mattuthavani in North Madurai.
Heavy rains were seen at Simmakkal, Masi street, Marret street, Avani Moola street, East Gate, South Gate, Veli streets, Kamarajar Salai, Anna Nagar, Yagappa Nagar, and Villapuram, among others. Most roads across the city quickly filled up with rainwater which stagnated in lower areas.
“Despite just a couple of hours of rain, there was knee deep water logging on the road near Vilakkuthoon and East Gate. Traffic movement also turned sluggish due to the rain and waterlogged roads.
There was traffic congestion at the u-turn close to the Tharaipalam near Simmakkal,” said V Ram, a resident of Kamarajar Salai. The huge crowd of people gathering for the chithirai festival procession on Tuesday evening in the Masi street were also affected due to the rain and waterlogged roads.
