Gang waylaids bizman, forces him to pay 3,000 via UPI
Madurai: A gang of three youths waylaid a businessman near Mattuthavani in Madurai on early Sunday and forced him to pay 3,000 via Google Pay. Police have arrested two of them so far.
Police said R Azharuddin, 37, of K Pudur, runs a wholesale business. Early on Sunday, he and his wife left for Trichy in a car to attend a relative's wedding. Around 1.30am, after crossing the Gopuram Nagar junction on Trichy Main Road, Azharuddin stopped the car in a secluded spot to relieve himself.
"Suddenly, three men came there on a two-wheeler, confronted Azharuddin and began hitting him, asking for cash he had. When Azharuddin showed them that he had no cash in hand, they forced him to send money through Google Pay by threatening to kill him. After getting passcode for the Azharuddin's mobile phone, the men transferred 1,500 in two transactions using a QR code," police said.
Following a complaint from Azharuddin, Mattuthavani police registered a robbery case. They identified the robbers as M Selvakumar, 19, B Manoj Kumar, 19 and S Kani, 19, of Othakadai. Police also booked 19-year-old Muneeswaran to whose account the money was transferred. Police arrested M Selvakumar and Manoj Kumar and have launched a search for others.
