MADURAI: In an incident of

, a three-member gang tied the

driver

to a

tree

and escaped with the vehicle in the wee hours of Wednesday.

The incident took place near the Madurai international airport. Police said Shahul Hameed, 52, son of Ibrahim from Mosi Keeranar Street in Erode, was employed as a driver. On Tuesday, he drove the family members of the owner to Madurai. He dropped them to their daughter's house in

Jaihindpuram

and slept in the car after parking it by the roadside on 1st Street in Jahindpuram.

According to the driver, three unknown men barged into the vehicle around 3.30 am. While one of them started driving the vehicle, a Swift Dzire, the other two pinned him down to the seat of the car. They also gagged his mouth. The gang went to a secluded spot near the airport, tied him to a tree before escaping with the vehicle.

He was rescued by passersby. Based on a complaint filed by the driver, Jaihindpuram police registered a case and carried out investigations.

Police said that they are working on a few leads but are yet to trace the car.
