Madurai: The Madurai district police nabbed four more men from Andhra Pradesh in connection with a ganja case here on Monday.
The accused have been identified as R Devaraj, 29, his brother R Rajasekar, 28, V Dare Bala Venkat Giri Babu, 28, and V Harish, 29, hailing from Visakhapatnam district
On October 7, based on a tip off about sale of ganja in Kammalapatti cremation ground on October 7, the Sedapatti police raided the spot, arrested S Anand and P Ananthakumar from Kammalapatti and seized 24kg of ganja from them. N Sethuraman, who managed to escape, was arrested on October 10.
During interrogation, Sethuraman revealed that they were procuring ganja in bulk from Uttupalam Naidu alias Appavu Naidu from Bongaram Merakalu village in Visakhapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh. Few days back, a special team travelled to Andhra Pradesh and nabbed Naidu. Naidu has two cases - one in Namakkal district for smuggling 240kg of ganja while another has been filed from Madurai intelligence wing for smuggling 160kg of ganja.
Naidu’s confession revealed the involvement of four other men. So, a special team travelled to Andhra Pradesh and arrested Devaraj, Rajasekar, Babu and Harish and brought them back to Madurai on Monday. The officials also seized 60kg ganja and two cars from them.
Madurai district superintendent of police (SP) R Shiva Prasad said that special teams have gone to the neighbouring state and made arrests in order to prevent the smuggling and sale of ganja in Madurai district. Such steps would continue to prevent the smuggling of ganja, he added.
Meanwhile, the Dindigul district police arrest three men and seized 400kg of ganja from them
Based on the order of the Dindigul district superintendent of police, V Baskaran, police personnel were carrying out intense patrolling in areas falling under the Dindigul taluk police limits. On Monday, officials who were involved in the vehicle inspection at Mullipatti - Chettiyapatti junction found 400kg of ganja being transported in two cars. They seized the car, contraband and arrested Praveen, 29, Sathishkumar, 26, of Chennai and Saravanakumar, 27, of Sivaganga.
