Forest dept probes reported migratory bird deaths near Koonthankulam sanctuary

Tirunelveli: Forest officials are investigating reports of migratory bird deaths near Koonthankulam Bird Sanctuary in Tirunelveli district, following complaints from farmers in nearby North Kaluvoor and Kadankulam.Farmers alleged that some migratory birds died due to lack of water supply from the Manimuthar Dam. However, district forest officials said no carcasses were recovered during inspections, possibly because they were scavenged by stray dogs, making it difficult to identify the species involved.
"We visited the site and assessed the situation, but we can't find any carcasses of the birds, as they may have been scavenged by stray dogs. The species of the birds could not be determined because carcasses were not recovered," an official said. Officials added that water scarcity alone may not explain the reported deaths, as wetland birds typically move to other water sources when levels fall. They also said there has been no report of bird flu or any mass bird deaths in the area. "If we receive information about bird deaths in the coming days, a veterinary team has been kept ready to ascertain the cause," the official said, adding that patrolling has been intensified around the reported locations.
