Madurai: A late-night fire at the LIC building on Mela Veeli Veethi on Wednesday killed a woman officer and left a man injured. Police identified the deceased as A Kalyani Nambi, 54, a senior manager at LIC.
Fire and rescue services received an alert at 8.46 pm and rushed four fire tenders to the spot. The blaze had engulfed the second floor, sending thick black smoke billowing from the windows. After nearly three hours, firefighters brought the fire under control.
Around 10.30 pm, personnel entered the building and recovered the charred body of Kalyani from her cabin and rescued an injured man. The injured, D Ram, 44, an administrative officer, suffered 28% burns and is undergoing treatment at Government Rajaji Hospital.
Thilagar Thidal police have registered a case. Preliminary inquiries suggest the fire originated in Kalyani Nambi's cabin, though the exact cause is yet to be determined.
On Thursday, information technology and digital services minister P T R Palanivel Thiagarajan and district collector K J Praveen Kumar visited the fire-hit building and reviewed the situation.
