Tourism dept hosting ‘food walk’ today

Madurai: Department of tourism is organising a special food walk to showcase Madurai's rich culinary heritage as part of celebrating World Tourism Day on Friday. Participants will get an opportunity to experience the city's iconic local flavours and traditional dishes.
A department release said the tour will commence at 5.30 pm from west tower of Meenakshi Amman temple. The walk will include tastings of several local delicacies such as ‘thennakuruthu' (a traditional coconut sweet), paruthipaal, athirasam, keera vadai and jigarthanda among other things. The tour is free of cost and will be led by a guide who will explain the cultural significance of each dish and its connection to Madurai's history.
The department is also organising a traditional art and cultural festival at the Kalaignar centenary jallikattu stadium on September 27 and 28. The event is designed to celebrate Tamil Nadu's rich cultural heritage and attract locals as well as tourists.
