Madurai: Organs harvested from a 58-year-old man who was declared brain dead at Madurai Govt Rajaji Hospital on Friday have benefitted four patients.
A Ramachandran was hit by a two-wheeler while walking near the Arapalayam bridge on Tuesday evening and was admitted to the trauma care centre of GRH.
However, he was declared brain dead on Friday. The deceased's brother, Pitchai, consented to donate his organs, and organs were harvested at the hospital on the same day. One of the kidneys was allotted to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Trichy, while another to Dr Murugan Hospital, Trichy. Both corneas were allotted to the GRH. The organs were transplanted to four people.
Meanwhile, the hospital staff and district officials paid homage to Ramachandran's body and accorded him state honours. The body was later handed over to relatives.
