Deal inked for climate resilience project in Ramnad
Madurai: The Tamil Nadu govt signed a Letter of Understanding (LoU) with United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), India, for implementation of a project titled ‘Adaptation for Resilience (ADAPT4R)' in Ramanathapuram district. Supported by Adaptation Fund, ADAPT4R is aimed at enhancing the adaptive capacity and food security of vulnerable agricultural communities in Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh. In Ramanathapuram, it will be implemented over five years by the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forests, in collaboration with WFP. The project, with a budget of $14 million, is designed to build climate resilience among smallholder farmers, particularly women, by promoting climate-resilient agricultural practices, improving access to information and resources, strengthening community institutions, and integrating early warning systems, said a state govt statement. The LoU builds on the agreement signed in August 2024 between the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Govt of India, and WFP. It was exchanged between Supriya Sahu, additional chief secretary to the govt, and Nozomi Hashimoto, deputy country director, World Food Programme, in Chennai on Wednesday. The ceremony was attended by senior officials and representatives from WFP and MoEFCC.
