Comedian ‘Alwa’ Vasu cremated in Madurai

Madurai: Comedian ‘Alwa’ Vasu who died after a prolonged illness here on Thursday night was cremated on Friday evening in the presence of a large number of fans, well-wishers and those from the film industry. His body was kept for the people to pay homage at his residence.

Apart from friends and family members, many local people also queued up to pay their respects. While some of his colleagues from the film industry made a visit, stars like Sathyaraj, Vishal, S Ve Shekhar, actor-cum-director M Sasikumar and director V Gowthaman called up the family to offered their condolences.

The 54-year-old who had acted in hundreds of films was undergoing treatment for a liver problem for the past six months. After prolonged hospitalisation, the family brought him to his residence at Munichalai after doctors confirmed that there was no chance of improvement. His family announced his passing away around t 10:30 pm on Thursday. He is survived by his wife and daughter.

Vasu was often seen playing second fiddle to comedian Vadivelu, who is also a native of Madurai. His way of dialogue delivery with a stark southern accent stood him out as a comedian and many of his dialogues are still relished by cine-goers. One of his most famous dialogues was ‘Kadallaye Illayam’ delivered alongside Vadivelu in the film ‘Ellam Avan Seyal.’

Vasu completed his masters in Tamil from The American College in the city. He began his career in Tamil cinema as assistant director to actor-cum-director Manivannan in the early 1990s. He shot to fame through his role in Manivannan’s political satire ‘Amaidhi Padai’ with Sathyaraj in a dual role in 1994. He stayed away from acting for the last few months after he fell ill.
