Collector honours ‘Green Champions’ in Madurai
Madurai: Three activists/organisations from Madurai who actively took part in various green activities towards conservation of the environment, received the ‘Green Champion’ award on Monday during celebrations for world environment day, observed on June 5.Madurai district collector MS Sangeetha handed over the award to PR Vishwanath, G Ashok Kumar, and N Karthikeyan. The trio were selected out of 10 applicants who were all given a chance to make a presentation about their green initiatives to a committee headed by the district collector on May 10. All three ‘Green Champion’ awardees also received a certificate and a cash prize of 1 lakh.To mark world environment day celebrations, various activities and events were held on Monday across Madurai. At Madurai railway junction, an awareness rally, flagged off. NCC volunteers of Latha Mathavan Polytechnic college were involved in Shramdaan activity around the railway station area while students of Sourashtra college of arts and science staged a skit on the ill-effects of use of plastics.Students of the Green Club of The American college, Madurai, organised a ‘Meendum Manjappai’ programme to promote use of yellow bags. The event was inaugurated by the college principal, Dr Davamani Christober. Yellow bags were distributed to the students and public while plastic bags and bottles were collected.
