According to the police, the victim was a Class XI student from Ariyanayagipuram near Srivaikuntam in Tuticorin and was studying at a private school in Tirunelveli. On Monday, the minor boy boarded a bus from near his native place to go to Srivaikuntam.

However, when the bus was crossing Kettiammalpuram, a three-member gang reportedly waylaid the bus and got onboard. The gang then assaulted the 17-year-old boy with a billhook before fleeing from the spot as other passengers intervened.

The Class XI boy meanwhile sustained injuries, including on his head. Srivaikuntam police were alerted and the injured teen was rushed to Srivaikuntam Government Hospital where he received first aid.

He was then taken in a 108 ambulance and admitted to Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital for further treatment.

The Srivaikuntam police registered a case and were investigating. Five special teams have been formed to trace and nab the accused. Police are probing various angles, including whether the attack may be due to previous enmity.
