Campaigns mark ‘World No Tobacco Day’
Madurai: From making a model of cigarette to students taking a pledge not to use tobacco, awareness campaigns marked the observance of ‘World No Tobacco Day’ in Madurai on Wednesday to highlight the dangers of tobacco use.
Madurai-based social activist G Ashokkumar made a human-size paper model of a cigarette to garner the attention of the public.
Madurai mayor V Indrani inaugurated the ‘World No Tobacco Day’ awareness event, organised by Indian Dental Association (IDA), at Sri Aurobindo Mira College of Education, Bypass Road.

More than 200 students from various arts and science and nursing colleges took an oath administered by deputy mayor T Nagarajan to not use tobacco. “With youths vulnerable to getting addicted to tobacco or smoking, we reached out to college students and explained about the ill effects of tobacco on the human body,” said Dr R Prabhakar, secretary, IDA Madurai.
Meanwhile, Brahma Kumaris Eshwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya conducted photo exhibitions at various spots.
