Brain dead 11-year-old boy’s organs give new lease of life to four
MADURAI: In a heartwarming incident, the organs of a brain dead 11-year-old boy from Virudhunagar were donated to the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) on Friday by his family. His organs, including the liver, gave a new lease of life to four individuals.
S Sabarish of Aruppukottai, was riding pillion on a two-wheeler with his relatives when the vehicle was hit by a speeding private bus on Wednesday afternoon near Aruppukottai. He was taken to Aruppukottai govt hospital and then admitted to a private hospital in Madurai for further treatment.
Later the same day, Sabarish was admitted with a head injury to GRH and was treated by the neurosurgery/ICU team. Despite active management, he was declared brain dead on Friday morning. The boy's father, Saravanan, came forward to donate his son's organs. Subsequently, organ harvesting was done at the trauma care centre emergency operation theatre on Friday evening.
The boy's liver, kidneys, and cornea were allotted to adult patients who required transplants. The liver was transplanted to a recipient at Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College Hospital in Perambalur.
Similarly, one of the kidneys and cornea were allotted to patients at GRH itself, while the other kidney was allotted to a patient at Apollo Hospital in Madurai. Doctors said that Sabarish's heart was unfortunately not viable for transplant to a suitable adult recipient.
Saravanan, a retired army personnel currently working as a junior assistant in a govt high school, said that god didn't give a chance for his son to live but that through organ donation, his son now lives on in four people.
The administration of GRH and Madurai Medical College paid homage to the departed soul, extending heartfelt gratitude. Sabarish was accorded state honours by the Virudhunagar district administration.
