Avert deaths in septic tanks: SC/ST panel
KARUR: National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes has said that governments should make efforts to avert tragedies like the one which happened in Karur where four construction workers were asphyxiated to death in a septic tank.
Commission vice-chairman Arun Haldar told reporters here on Saturday that the government should sensitise people against getting involved in such unsafe work. “Tragedies like this should not happen in future,” he said after meeting the families of the four victims, K Mohanraj, P Siva, V Sivakumar and Gopal. “Officials should do their duty of monitoring such unauthorised constructions,” said Arun Haldar. Meanwhile, Karur corporation officials said that departmental action has been initiated against a town planning employee for facilitating unauthorised construction of the building and septic tank.
Arun Haldar was accompanied by district collector Dr T Prabhushankar, IG central zone, Santhosh Kumar, SP E Sundaravathanam and other officials.
