AIADMK splits Madurai rural to appease minister

Madurai: In an attempt to appease revenue minister R B Udayakumar, who is upset with the AIADMK’s Lok Sabha seat allocation in Madurai, the party rural district has now been bifurcated into Madurai rural east and west districts. The minister who is also the Amma Peravai secretary, has now been appointed as Madurai rural east secretary too.

While the bifurcation of Madurai into three party districts was ostensibly part of the delimitation process, sources said it was to pacify the minister. The decision came in the wake of disagreement over choosing the candidates for the Lok Sabha election. On Sunday, there was a delay of a few hours before the AIADMK released its candidates’ list close to 11pm. Ministers Udayakumar and Sellur Raju had been united in demanding the candidature of former MLA R Tamilarasan, but the party high command did not concede it.

Madurai’s sitting MP R Gopalakrishnan is also said to have moved his application for a second term through Union minister Piyush Goyal, who is election in charge of BJP in Tamil Nadu. He was quite confident that he would get it, said a party source. However, when V V Raj Satyan was announced as the candidate, the two local ministers objected to it. As his father V V Rajan Chellappa is an MLA and Madurai rural district secretary, Satyan’s candidature meant the family would have three plum posts. It was decided to bifurcate Madurai district AIADMK and give Udayakumar the post of rural east district secretary after which matters were settled. TNN
