Madurai: An abandoned newborn baby boy was rescued from a roadside by Madurai rural police on Sunday.
Police said that a shepherd found the child on Sivaganga Road at Varichur and alerted the local police. A team from the Karuppayurani police station reached the spot and shifted the baby to Government Rajaji Hospital. The child was found wrapped in a towel.
Members of Madurai district child welfare committee B Pandiaraja and L Shanmugam reached the hospital and received the child.
Doctors said that the child could have been born a week ago. The child was kept at the hospital for treatment and observation.
The child will be shifted to an adoption home in the city, child welfare committee members said.
