89k voters added in Trichy, over 1L in Madurai
Trichy/Madurai: The final electoral roll released by Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday after the special intensive revision (SIR) exercise increased the total voters in the central region, comprising nine districts, by 3.2 lakh. According to the roll, there are 95.3 lakh voters in the region. Trichy district topped the list by adding 89,123 voters, followed by Thanjavur district with addition of 59,387 voters.The total number of registered voters across 10 assembly constituencies in Madurai district is 24,66,954. Compared to the draft electoral roll published on Dec 19 last year, there was an increase of 1,06,797 voters. In Trichy, district collector V Saravanan published the final roll at the collectorate on Monday, while in Madurai, district collector K J Praveen Kumar released the roll.Among the nine assembly segments in Trichy district, Srirangam has the maximum voters of 2,83,862, and Thuraiyur, the lowest number of voters at 2,09,011. The number of voters has substantially increased in Trichy West and Trichy East segments in the corporation limits compared to the draft roll released on Dec 19, 2025. "Trichy district added around 34,000 first-time voters in the final roll. Besides, there was an instance where even an 85-year-old voter was enrolled," the collector told TOI. There are 2,785 polling booths in Trichy district, unchanged from the draft roll.Madurai collector Praveen Kumar told reporters that 324 new polling stations have been added, including in certain high-rise buildings such as Shanti Sadan Apartments in Kochadai. This brought the number of polling stations up to 3,076 in total across 1,197 locations. Each constituency will also feature a model polling station specifically for women and people with disabilities. These stations will be managed by female staff and equipped with accessibility features, as well as play areas for children.The collector said five constituencies — Madurai East, North, South, Thiruparankundram, and Thirumangalam — were flagged for high-expenditure monitoring. Surveillance in these constituencies will be tripled. He said 368 stations were classified as ‘vulnerable,' and 12 stations as ‘critical.' These stations will be equipped with additional CCTV cameras, webcasting, micro-observation equipment, and Central Armed Police Forces.The counting centres announced are TNAU (Agri College) for Melur and Madurai East, Anna University for Sholavandhan and Usilampatti, Thiagarajar College of Engineering for Madurai North and South, Madura College for Madurai Central and West, as well as Govt Arts College for Thiruparankundram and Tirumangalam constituencies.The collector also announced the launch of apps like cVIGIL for citizens to report code of conduct violations, with anonymity guaranteed. Any violation will have a ‘100-minute resolution time' for complaints, the collector added.
