Annual rooster show in Dindigul sees 350 winged participants
MADURAI
: More than 350 roosters from different parts of the country were brought to the yearly rooster show organised by the Tamil Nadu Aseel Organisation held at Sithuvarpatti near Ayyalur in Dindigul district on Sunday.Roosters from Chandigarh, West Bengal, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha were showcased at the event organised to create awareness and promote indigenous varieties. More than 35 varieties including Kaagam, Kozhikaruppu, Kokkuvellai, Noolan, Mayil, Karungeeri, Sengeeri, Poodhiseval, Ponram and Suthakaruppu were on display.
According to the organisers, a 30 to 60 day-old chick is sold anywhere between Rs 5,000 and Rs 35, 000, whereas an adult will fetch up to Rs 15,000 to Rs 1 lakh. “It is important to preserve indigenous roosters. Just like bulls, roosters also help the farming community,” said V Manikandan, president of Tamil Nadu Aseel Organisation.
A large number of rooster owners from Kerala took part in the evening. B Dipinraj from Thiruvananthapuram took part along with his friends. He came with varieties like Vallurkeeri and Milky White.
