Madurai: A 42-year-old woman from Keelavalavu near Melur in Madurai was robbed of her gold jewellery and cash by a three-member gang when she was alone at her house on Monday. S Hemalatha of Vachampatti is married and has two children, one school-going and another in college. Her husband Shanmugasundaram is employed in Qatar.
On Monday evening, she was alone at her residence when a man and two women arrived at the house. The man claimed that he was working with Hemalatha’s husband in Qatar and that they had come to invite the family to a marriage. Believing their words, Hemalatha let them in. However, when she went to get a glass of water, the three of them caught hold of her, gagged her using cellophane tape and tied her up. The trio then threatened her and robbed her of gold jewellery weighing 8½ sovereigns, Rs 50,000 in cash and a mobile phone before leaving. It look a few hours for Hemalatha to finally manage to open the door with the help of neighbours .
Based on a complaint filed by the woman, Keelavalavu police registered a case under section 392 of IPC for robbery and are investigating. Police said that all scientific investigations were carried out and efforts are on to nab the three accused.
In another incident in district, a 27-year-old woman from Sitthireddipatti in Thirumangalam was robbed of her gold chain weighing 3 sovereigns while she was sleeping at her house. G Lavanya, 27, works at a departmental store.
Police said that in the early of hours of Monday, an unknown person entered the woman’s house, snatched the gold chain from her neck and fled. Nagayapuram police registered a case and were investigating.
