1,872 kg of banned tobacco products seized in Madurai; three arrested

MADURAI: The

Madurai

district police on Monday arrested three people from near

Saptur

and seized 1,872 kg of banned

tobacco products

worth Rs 30 lakh that they had stored for distribution.


According to the police, special teams have been formed to investigate smuggling of drugs and other substances in Madurai region. Acting on a tip-off, a special police team interrogated Arun Pandian, 27, of

Srivilliputhur

. The man confessed to smuggling banned tobacco products with his friends at a location in Saptur area in Madurai district.

A special police team carried out a search in Saptur and arrested Saravanan Manikandan,27, Muthukumar, 25, and Arun Pandian for smuggling banned tobacco products.

The police also seized as much as 1872 kg of banned tobacco products worth Rs 30 lakh and three vehicles including two cars and a minitruck from the accused.

The police registered a case.
