Woman sarpanch among 11 booked for assault

Ludhiana: Police have booked a woman sarpanch of Tharike village and 10 others for allegedly assaulting a man in Sua road area.
The accused were identified as sarpanch Gurpreet Kaur Grewal, her son Jashn, Majinder Singh, Mohan Sharma, Gurpreet Chakkiwala and five to six unidentified persons.
Dr Jaspreet Singh Dhawan of Tharike said his friend Tarseem was getting a house constructed in a colony on Sua road and had given him keys of the underconstruction house.He was going to check his friend’s house when there was a commotion in the area. He said he saw some people coming towards him and when they came closer, he recognized them as sarpanch of the village, her son, Majinder, Mohan, Gurpreet and some others.
Jaspreet alleged that sarpanch Gurpreet Kaur provoked others to attack him following which they chased and assaulted him. He alleged that the accused also abused and threatened him and his turban was also removed.
Gurpreet had told Jaspreet not to oppose street vendors and the people who had set up encroachments were her vote bank. The complainant said that he had been opposing the encroachers which is the sarpanch got him assaulted. He said after the incident, he informed police.
Sadar police station has registered a case against the accused under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 149 (unlawful assembly) of the IPC.
Police said that the CCTV footage showed several persons chasing the complainant.
