Woman immolates self, live-in partner booked

Ludhiana: A 50-year-old woman immolated herself in Makkar Colony of Dhandari Kalan on Thursday. The woman was rushed to a hospital with 80% burns, where she succumbed to her injuries. The woman in her dying declaration blamed her live-in partner for her extreme step.The deceased was identified as Goldy, 50. Acting on statements of victim’s son Vishal Verma, Sahnewal police lodged an FIR against the accused, identified as Nishan Masih of Makkar Colony of Dhandari Kalan.

Vishal in his statements said his mother used to work in a factory. On July 25, 2021, she went to work, but did not return. They searched for her, but to no avail. Almost after one-and-a-half years, she called up Vishal on April 20 and said Nishan had held her captive. She also informed him that the accused had made some lewd videos of her and used to warn her against leaving him saying that he would make the videos viral on the social media.Vishal alleged that a few days back, her mother had come to his house and stayed with him and his wife for a couple of days. However, the accused kept on blackmailing him due to which she went back to his house in Makkar Colony.Inspector Inderjit Singh, SHO, Sahnewal police station, said, “The police probe found that the woman was in a live-in relationship with the accused, a truck driver, for the past two years. A few days ago, Goldy and Nishan had an argument after which Nishan left the house and went out of town. Goldy kept calling him, but he did not take her calls. Upset over the development, she went to her son’s house for a few days. On Thursday, Nishan returned home and Goldy also reached there to meet him. However, Nishan did not open the door for her, following which she set herself on fire outside the house.”The inspector said, “When the woman was at the hospital, her son recorded a video in which she said Nishan was responsible for her death. On the basis of the statements of Vishal and death declaration of the woman, the police lodged an FIR against the accused under Sections 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC.”
