LUDHIANA: Five days after rape convict Harpreet Singh committed suicide in Ludhiana central jail, the police booked his wife and her paramour for abetment to suicide.
Police registered the case based on the suicide note left by the 35-year-old convict.
Sentenced 10-year imprisonment for raping a minor, Harpreet was fighting depression as wife Jassi had an alleged affair with Kewal Krishan of Ber Khurd village.
ASI Sudarshan Kumar said Harpreet had hanged self in the jail on October 22. The police had initially proceeded with Section 176 of the CrPC. But during a magisterial inquiry, a suicide note was recovered which gave a new twist to the case.
In the suicide note, Harpreet had mentioned that his wife Jassi has developed illicit relation with Kewal Krishan and he cannot accept this following which he is ending his life.
The ASI said a case under Sections 306 (abatement to suicide) and 34 (act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC has been registered against the accused.
