LUDHIANA:
Rain god seems to be showering troubles for the desperate Ludhianvis, who often get caught in the traffic jams caused due to waterlogging and sewerage blockages following a downpour. Thursday afternoon was no different. Once again it was like a nightmare for the commuters, who were caught in one-and-a-half-hour traffic jam at Dholewal Chowk.
Though no more welcome, black clouds continue to deliver what is expected from them.
However, on the other hand, the municipal corporation failed to deliver. The authorities could not to clean the sewerage system before the monsoon and now commuters are bearing the brunt.
Satwinder Singh, caught in the traffic jam with his car, said, ‘Monsoon is a beautiful season, but MC has made a mess of it. We have not been able to enjoy the cool drops after the scorching heat just because MC didn’t do its homework.’
Nowadays, traffic jams are a common sight, as rainwater clogs city roads. Even a drizzle is enough to bring city to a grinding halt. “I had gone out for lunch and now I don’t know how to return to work. It is disgusting, especially when some clients are waiting for you. Rains are no more pleasing here,” Abhishek, who works in a finance company, said.
Traffic jams that too during rains are worst times for those commuting on two wheelers. “I was on the way to attend a friend’s wedding, but suddenly it started raining and the next moment I got stuck in a traffic jam. Now, as I am totally drenched, I can’t even think of going to the party,” Amrita rued.
Downpour didn’t only ruin the plans of many, overflowing rainwater also left a few vehicles non-functional. Besides leaving the owners stranded, these vehicles also create problem in the flow of traffic. “Due to water, a snag has developed in my scooter,”said Pankaj, on whose face frustration was writ large.
Additional commissioner MC Kamalpreet Kaur Brar said, “We are cleaning the sewerage system. We will do our best to solve the problems created by rainwater.”
