Veterinary university’s college marks World Fisheries Day in Ludhiana.

Ludhiana: The College of Fisheries (COF) at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University (Gadvasu) celebrated World Fisheries Day (WFD) on Friday by organising a series of events focused on the responsible use and conservation of natural aquatic resources.WFD is celebrated globally to promote sustainable fisheries, safeguard the health of aquatic ecosystems, and show solidarity with fishing communities. India's theme for WFD-2025 is ‘India's Blue Transformation: Strengthening Value Addition in Seafood Exports'. Meera D Ansal, dean of COF, emphasised the vital role of rivers, lakes, and oceans in providing wild fish stocks. "Public awareness, responsibility and participation is essentially required for conserving them for future generations," she stated. To kick off the WFD festivities, COF students undertook a public awareness campaign along the banks of the Sualej river at Ladowal and the Sidhwan Canal in Ludhiana. Students sought to educate the public on the severe consequences of dumping garbage, plastics, and various wastes into rivers and canals, which impacts aquatic life, associated wildlife, and human health.A poster competition was organized for budding fisheries professionals on the theme, "Conserve Aquatic Resources - Save Life," aimed at instilling environmental concern in young minds. The WFD celebration will continue on Saturday with several engaging activities like live fish display, fish recipe competition, sale of value-added fish and shrimp products, and Education Corner, highlighting the socio-economic profile of the fisheries sector and showcasing academic and professional opportunities in India and abroad.Jatinder Paul Singh Gill, vice-chancellor of Gadvasu, congratulated the fisheries community, stressing that conserving natural resources is crucial so that they can be "economically harnessed in a sustainable manner under the umbrella of ‘One Health', without any adverse effects on the environment, human health and wildlife".
