Trio remanded in Ludhiana over December’s prison violence.

Ludhiana: City police have secured a two-day production warrant for three inmates allegedly involved in a violent assault on high-ranking prison officials at the Ludhiana Central Jail.The move comes two months after a chaotic skirmish on Dec 17, 2025, which left several staff members, including the jail superintendent and CRPF personnel, injured by improvised weapons. The three inmates brought from judicial custody for interrogation are Ranjit Singh (Shimlapuri, Ludhiana), Charandeep Singh (Amritsar), and Baljit Singh (Muktsar).
The investigating officer, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Dinesh Kumar confirmed that police had now questioned 17 out of the 22 inmates booked in the case. Applications for production warrants for the remaining five suspects are currently being processed by the court.The violence reportedly began as a scuffle between inmates on Dec 16, 2025. When Jail superintendent Kulwant Singh Sidhu and his security team intervened the following day, the situation escalated into a targeted attack. Injured officials included the superintendent, DSP (security) Jagjit Singh, a prison warder, a sub-inspector, the Moti Nagar SHO, and two CRPF personnel. Inmates allegedly used iron rods, sticks, and bricks ripped from the prison's flower beds to inflict injuries.The Division Number 7 police have charged the 22 inmates under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from duty), 121 (voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant), 191(3) (armed rioting), and 52-A (Prison Act) (prohibited articles and violence within prison walls).
