Tint of trouble: Toxic colours leave their mark on Ludhiana
Ludhiana: Following the recent Holi celebrations, city specialists have reported a surge in patients seeking treatment for skin and eye-related complications. While medical experts noted an overall increase in public awareness, several cases of chemical reactions and physical injuries were documented across various hospitals in the district.Dr Alka Dogra, a Ludhiana-based dermatologist, confirmed she treated multiple patients suffering from rashes, itching, burning sensations, and skin redness attributed to Holi colors. She highlighted a particularly severe case involving a patient with a pre-existing skin condition that was significantly aggravated by chemical exposure. Dr Dogra cautioned that individuals with existing dermatological issues should avoid synthetic colors, as they often face an intensification of symptoms on exposed skin surfaces. She anticipates more such cases may surface in the coming days.
In contrast, Dr Abhilasha Williams, Professor of Dermatology and Vice Principal at CMC, observed fewer cases this year, identifying only a small number of patients with allergic contact dermatitis. She noted the absence of severe chemical burns, attributing the milder symptoms to improved patient awareness. Many patients reportedly took immediate corrective action by washing the affected areas and applying moisturizers shortly after exposure.Ophthalmologists also reported festive casualties. Dr Brijinder Singh Rana, a city eye surgeon, treated five patients, including one male who sustained an eye injury after being hit by a water balloon. Other cases involved toxic chemicals from colors causing allergic reactions. Similarly, Dr Gurvinder Kaur, Head of Ophthalmology at DMCH, stated that while case numbers remained low, patients were treated with specialized eye drops for minor irritations. Experts continue to advise the use of organic colors and post-celebration moisturizing to mitigate health risks.Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Women's day wishes, messages and quotes !
