LUDHIANA: When city residents Pavneet Kaur, Urmil Sood and Tarlok Singh Jaggi got up on stage doing bhangra and giddha at a hotel on Ferozepur Road on Sunday, nobody in the audience could spot any sign of a hurting knee or hip. All three - 52, 70 and 76 - have undergone knee or hip replacement surgery but are now in the pink of their health, promoting the message of leading a healthy life.
With their performance the three made it very clear that they are ready to go back to their passions of gardening, golfing and biking, thanks to the surgery based on CT Scan technology and advanced planning software created by a US-based company. Pavneet Kaur, a resident of Basant Avenue, said she had never imagined she will ever be able to dance on any occasion but has surprisingly regained all her energy after the surgery and the pain is almost gone.
Punjab Mata Nagar-resident Urmil Sood said she was elated to know that with average activity levels, a knee replacement like this can last upto 25-30 years. "I enjoyed dancing on stage and I'm very happy about the ease in walking,'' she said.
Tarlok Singh Jaggi, a resident of Doraha, is so impressed by the re-implant surgery that he wants his grandchildren to become doctors and then to send them to the USA so that they can also learn to do the surgery. "I will make them promise me to return to India with their skill and use it for serving people. I am so excited that I can go back to playing golf,'' he added.
Dr Manuj Wadhwa, director and head of orthopaedics and joint replacement at a leading hospital in Mohali, who has done more than 10,000 knee and joint replacements, said now total knee replacement surgery is possible in just 15 minutes. "The new technique eliminates 22 steps as compared to a conventional surgery which reduces the possibility of infections, blood loss and ensures faster recovery,'' said Dr Wadhwa. He added that no two knees are alike.
