LUDHIANA: ''You have to be in the system to improve it. This is the reason why I have opted for the civil services,' said Shruti Sharma, a resident of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, who has got an all-India 16th rank.
Saying that her success mantra was not to stop until the work was done, this former lecturer of Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College (GNDEC) said there were several milestones to get and she had just achieved one.
Speaking to TOI about her dreams and what it takes to achieve, 25-year-old Shruti said that she wanted to bring faith of people back in the system so she thought of opting for premier services.
Clearing the exam in her first attempt, she said
the preparations did not
come easy as for the past one year she had been studying 10-12 hours. There were some days when she slept only for two hours and practised for 22 hours. ''Civil services study is very extensive but I enjoyed every subject and in all of them history was my favourite one,' said Shruti.
A student of BCM School, Shruti got a scholarship in class X for her outstanding achievement in academics so her entire fees for +1 and +2 was waived by the school.
She even got the scientist of the year award for her model that showed how waste material could be re-used. She had done her engineering from GNDEC and topped in her last semester in the university by getting 90%.
''If I am been given a chance to work in a department of my choice then I will opt for education as it is a need of the hour to uplift the education system. By doing this many social problems that prevail in society can be cured,'' she said.
Shruti's father KN Sharma and mother Santosh Sharma said that she was so proud of her daughter that it could not be expressed in words.
