Resident moves Lok Adalat over contaminated water in colonies
Ludhiana: Concerned about continuous supply of contaminated drinking water in several colonies, a resident of Friends Colony in ward number 93 has approached the permanent lok adalat (public utility services), Ludhiana, seeking directions to the MC to provide clean and safe water for residents of affected areas. The applicant, Harpreet Singh Jad, a resident of Friends Colony on Jassian Road, has filed an application against the MC commissioner, the mayor, superintending engineer of the operation and maintenance cell of Zone D, and the area councillor.
In his complaint, Harpreet Singh alleged that water supply lines in colonies such as Jagat Nagar, Tarsem Nagar, New Tarsem Colony, Sandhu Nagar and Atam Nagar are nearly three decades old. Due to their age and dilapidated condition, leakage frequently occurs at various points, he claimed. According to the applicant, sewage water gets mixed with the drinking water supply through damaged pipelines, precipitating a serious public health concern for thousands of residents dependent on this network. He stated that he had repeatedly urged authorities to replace the old lines but no effective action was taken.Harpreet Singh said he had even approached the area councillor on Aug 28, 2025, requesting urgent intervention on behalf of residents. However, he claimed the councillor was unable to provide any relief, leaving the situation unchanged. In his application, he argued that access to pure drinking water is a fundamental right of every citizen, and supply of contaminated water by authorities amounts to a violation of this right. The complainant sought the intervention of the Lok Adalat, requesting directions to the MC to replace damaged water supply lines in all the affected colonies. He also demanded compensation of Rs 5 lakh for mental harassment and suffering, alleging that the authorities had failed to fulfil their duties despite multiple complaints and reminders.Meanwhile, an MC official stated that the civic body had already obtained required approvals from authorities concerned. He added that replacement of old water supply lines would begin shortly.
