LUDHIANA: The birthday of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, was celebrated with great pomp and show in the city on Tuesday. Residents showed a lot of enthusiasm while celebrating the festival. A large number of devotees turned up at gurdwaras in the vicinity with fervour. A highlight of the celebrations was recitation of teachings of the tenth guru.
Gurdwara Shri Dukh Niwaran Sahib remained the centre of the celebrations.
A large number of devotees gathered to pay obeisance at the gurdwara. They showed their love and affection towards the Guru through their service at the gurdwara. Shri Guru Singh Sabha gurdwara, Model Town, also celebrated the Guru’s birthday with great excitement. Kirtan gyans in gurdwaras left everyone mesmerized. At some gurdwaras, poem recitation functions were organized. Flowers were showered and langars were served.
Rich and poor were one in serving the Guru on the holy day. They broomed and cleaned washrooms, washed utensils, prepared and served langar together to show their gratitude to the Guru.
“The tenth and last Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh, regarded as a prophet-teacher, created the Khalsa. That went on to become one of the most important events in the history of Sikhism,” said devotee Satinder Singh. “He was born at Patna Sahib, Bihar. The Guru was the leader of the Sikh faith, a warrior, a poet and a philosopher. For the Sikh society, he epitomizes manhood. He was highly educated, skilled in horsemanship, armed combat, chivalrous and generous in character. People wanting to carve out a niche in the society would do well to follow him,” he added.
Amandeep Singh Cheema, another devotee, said, “This is a very holy day for us as our Guru was born on this day. We are very grateful to God for what he has taught and given us.”
Paramjot Singh, another devotee, said, “This is a great day when we can see all engaging in festivities together, showing we all are equal and nobody is above or beneath anyone.”
