LUDHIANA: The Department of Vegetable Science (VS) of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has been awarded a research project entitled, “Pyramiding multiple resistance genes (Ty, Ph and Mi) in high-yielding varieties of tomato through MAS” by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.
Divulging the information, a tomato breeder, Dr MS Dhaliwal, Head of VS and Principal Investigator of the project, said that the project aims at developing tomato cultivars resistant to leaf curl virus, late blight and root knot nematodes.
The total cost of the project will be Rs 60 lakh and its duration will be four years. Dr Kuldeep Singh (molecular geneticist), Dr SK Jindal (tomato breeder), Dr Abhishek Sharma (plant virologist), Mrs Sukhjit Kaur (nematologist) and Ms Amrinder kaur (fungal pathologist) are the team members of the project.
The PAU vice-chancellor, Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon and the Director of Research, Dr SS Gosal congratulated the team for successfully competing for the research grant.
