LUDHIANA: The self-immolation at the mini-secretariat has raised several questions over the security in the complex that has the offices of deputy commissioner, police commissioner, district transport officer and also the district court.
However, with all the top officials of the city in the same complex also, no one came to the rescue of Ajeet Singh as he shouted for help.
Ajeet Singh, a retired laboratory assistant, who succumbed to burn injuries after set himself on fire near the DC office around 12 noon on Monday.
"The security situation here is pathetic. Had the security staff been active an immediate help to the deceased could have been provided. Even the ambulance came only after the victim was sent by the people in a private vehicle," said Kamaljit Kaur, a riot victim.
With tears in her eyes she said her son was burnt alive in the 84 riots, but this man could have been saved. "I rushed to the officers but no one came out when he was crying for help," she added.
Mahavir, who was also present in the complex said, "There should be apt security outside the deputy commissioner?s office. Not even a single cop was seen trying to save the victim. I simply do not understand where were the security guards of all the administrative officers at the time of the incident? He was here for almost 20 minutes and was absolutely burnt when he was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle."
When approached on the issue Deputy Commissioner Rahul Tiwari said, "I had immediately come out and my driver helped to put him in a vehicle. I would be writing a letter to the commissioner police for enhancing security near the office."
In an attempt to justify the lapse of security personnel, police commissioner Ishwar Singh said, "It happened all of a sudden and the victim had poured a lot of oil on himself and thus could not be saved but I would direct the security to be more alert."
